duckling pattern
8 Oct, 2008
So I decided to share. Coz why not. I saw simpler ones at some places, you know...  And didn't find a pattern when I was looking for one, so that has to be amended.

Amigurumi duckling

Materials: F hook and some scrap yarn in yellow and orange, not much, really. And something to stuff with (pellets or fiberfill).

I usually start from a magic ring, unless noted otherwise.
Work in continuous rows or else. :D
Tip: Use invisible decrease stitches for neater effect. Or split the body from the head at the 20th row, and start the head separately from the end backwards.

body&head: (yellow)
1. 6
2. 12 (6inc)
3. 18 (sc1, inc1)x6
4. 24 (sc2, inc1)x6
5. 30 (sc3, inc1)x6
6. 34 (the tail. inc4, sc26)
7. 36 (sc2, inc2, sc30)
8. 34 (sc1, dec2, sc31)
9. 30 (dec4, sc26)
10-19. dec by one in each row. I like neat decrease rows, so mine has a line from the tail to the head (the dec is the very first stitch in the row). If you don't, make each dec at a different place. In row 19 you should have 18 stitches.
20. 15 (dec1, sc4, dec1, sc4, dec1, sc4)
21. 20 (3,inc1)x5
22-24. 25    <- STUFF NOW!
25. 19 (sc2,dec1)x6, sc1
26. 13 (sc1,dec1)x6, sc1
27. 7 (dec6, sc1)
Pull closed or not - the beak shall cover it anyways.

beak: (orange yarn, prepared separately)
1. 6sc
2-6. 12sc
Leave tail to sew to the body!

legs:  (orange yarn, make 2)
1. ch6, turn
2. 5sc, turn
3. 4sc, turn
4. 3sc, turn
5. 2sc, turn
6. 1sc
Leave longish tail to sew to body. (won't need much)

During assembly, insert the feet into the first single decrease row of the body (10th),  and secure the last two rows into place with two or three stitches. The beak shall be stuffed very sightly, too, and placed so that its top is in line with the closed opening of the body.

Have fun, go wild!

I love this duck! But I'm a bit confused about step 6, What do you mean by "the tail"?

I'm glad you like it - feedback is always appreciated on my side. And by the tail I meant to indicate that it was the starting point from which on the formation of the tail begins - the pointy bit (formed by the increases due in that round) sticking up and out of the otherwise rotund bum of the duckling. I hope that helped. :D

I decreased one in every row from ten to nineteen, but on row nineteen I have twenty stiches. Help!

Uh-oh, that's not good, but not serious, either. I guess a decrease might have gotten lost somewhere along the lines, it doesn§t matter as long as the body doesn§t seem to be terraced, just decreases with a slight slope. You could do two moree rounds of (dec1,sc around) if it doesn't make the body too thin - it varies with people and moods how close the rows turn out, so this is something you have to check yourself.
But another solution would be to make a shoulder for the duckling, and that'd make the row, assuming you've made the decs first in each row: 4sc, dec, 8sc, dec, 4sc. This would not elongate the body that much. Or if it's too long already(again, you must trust your own personal judgement), you could frog the last row til the first dec, then go on with 3sc, dec, 8sc, dec, 3sc.
Hope that helps. :)

I don't understand steps 21-27. You just wrote numbers, not really how to increase, so I got confused... Can you explain some more? Thanks so much!
otherwise then that-the duck is very cute(:

I added a detailed description, run wild with it. And thanks - I hope yours will be cute, too.
